Ever since I got my DSLR I've been wanting to get a good shot of a sunbird, so on Monday we went to Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens near Johannesburg where several species are in abundance this time of year.
Knowing they feed on nectar, we went to the rockery where the aloe plants are in full bloom in winter and we could hear sunbirds everywhere. With a bit of patience I managed to get some good shots. This is the cream of the crop, a male White Bellied Sunbird who came and sat on a branch right in front of me.

Quote: Nice capture they are such beautiful birds to see I have a breeding pair in my garden at the moment they like to eat the lavender plants
Chilly today in Joburg isnt it !
Mary
Yes, chilly indeed, but I'm from Scotland originally so this is like a summer day for me!
Sadly, we haven't managed to attract sunbirds to our garden yet, even though we've planted plants that should attract them. However, being only 9km away from WSBG, I can go and photograph them any time.
Thanks for your comments.
