This is an adult male Amethyst (African Black) Sunbird. It's very difficult to get a good shot that shows the colours perfectly and this one doesn't quite manage that, but it does at least show some of the purple shimmering patch on his throat that gives rise to the 'amethyst' in his name. He also has a shimmering green patch on his crown but because of his dark colouring, it's difficult to show all three colours properly exposed. All the same, I was quite pleased with this shot which was taken at close range on macro at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, Johannesburg.

Nice shot - Oops, wrong way up.

It's not the wrong way up, he was perched sideways on the upright stem of the plant, as sunbirds often are. This is a straight crop from a landscape shot exactly as it came off the camera, so no rotation required.

Beautiful capture of the amethyst sunbird.
They are like my hummingbirds. I cant see the iridescent colors unless they want to show them to me, which they do, they hover near me in such a way that the sun catches their brilliance.
You are an amazingly talented photographer.
