A little bit of history – in the late 18th Century the old central cemetery at Les Innocents was full to (literally) overflowing. A decision was reached to clear it and to develop four new cemeteries in what were then outlying villages.
You may well have heard of three of those, Montmartre, Père Lachaise and Montparnasse; you are less likely to have heard of Passy, but it's the one most people will have walked past – it lies just off Trocadéro, overlooking the Eiffel Tower. It is much smaller than the others – it caters for the upmarket side of Paris which has always had a much lower density of population. It is the only one of the four to have a heated waiting room for mourners.
Here we are looking into one of the tiny chapels that mark family graves. They had their heyday in the 19th Century but are a continuing tradition – the couturier and parfumier Hubert Givenchy has a rather fine one nearby.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

"the couturier and parfumier Hubert Givenchy has a rather fine one nearby."
The sweet smell of success even in death, that's Paris for you.
The blue cross and it's shadow is quite surprising but very bold.
Dougie
Thanks to everyone who has visited here today, I'm delighted at how well this is being received.
There are any number of similar chapels but so often the glass is broken or dirty.
It's a late start for me today, and our last day in school before the Christmas holidays. Very soon we will have time to rest and recover... ![]()
Keep warm, everyone!
Moira
Excellent capture. The diagonal blue 'reflection' makes for such a strong composition.

This has been beautifully seen, thought out and created
Love this, Moira, with that beautiful deep blue of the window being cast onto the wall - excellently composed, too
Definitely one for the favourites...worthy of my Award, too...

Think it's all been said - really well done.

Quote: wow in fact WOW
My feelings just now, opening up here after a particularly trying exams session! (Just how many non-functioning CD players can one school accumulate and pile on the same mug in the same day??)
Thanks to John for the GEA and to Trev for the UA, two awards in a day is pretty special; and thanks to everyone who has called in here. I think it's a bottle of the red stuff tonight to celebrate...
Moira
Edit - Can I add that there's been a certain amount of dodging on the statue of Mary, to get some detail into the shadows, but the blue light is as taken.
Ergh! I'm envious and not afraid to voice it! This beats my slice of red by a long mile. Fabulous Moira!
Anne
Beautifully composed and captured, congrats on the awards.
Wonderful image Moira, complemented by your “little bit of history” ![]()

This is a lovely shot Moira, I really like it. Good title too.

Such wonderful light reflected on the stone wall, this image fully deserves all the accolades it has received
You were either very lucky with your timing, or you had the patience to wait for the sun to be in the right place. For me the light on the wall makes the shot much more interesting. That's not to say it wouldn't have been without it, just that it is even better with it.
Well seen & well taken Moira.
Now this is excellent Moira, love the blue reflection on the wall and captured perfectly!
Very interesting write up too.
Nice one
Ricky.
Lovely capture and well deserved awards Moira![]()

Hi Moira - I see you posted this about 2 months ago but I've only come across it just now. I think it's a really fine photograph, beautifully composed, very striking colour and of course, a very interesting story. Well done.
John
