I like the shot, and Ive looked through the other shots about the subject, and your portfolio in general, which has a number of very good images.
I understand the crowd with the hands raised are to help the people on the right, climbing on each others shoulders, - in case someone falls.
For me, mono works better with this shot rather than the treatment you have here. I find that Im drawn to faces that appear a little blue, and it looks odd, - to me. It might work with selective colour, or a desaturaion overall that didnt result in the blue tone?
I also think the strength of the image, - similar to your others is is the hands, and upturned faces, so including the climbers at the right is good from a documentary point of view, but is not needed for the shot to work.
Subsequently, the mods reflect this. Mod1 is an 8 X 10 crop, mono, with a sepia tint; mod2 is a 10 X 8 crop, mono, and Ive used a little blurring around the grouping of hands in the centre to draw attention to that area.
