Home work
If this is really a first attempt Neil I'd be absolutely overjoyed tbh. The lighting is perfect for this kind of shot, shows just enough and leaves the rest to your imagination. The pose is good and again the head turned away for me works, it's that what you can't see.The best bit though is that you are going to do this even more and get even better at it, can't wait in all honesty, top marks!!

Buddy List Macro Challenge 2009
For a first attempt I'd be mightily proud. I know I'm not in your group Nick but it is still rather good and I'd be happy if I had done it. Like Marymac says above I don't know enough about this type of togging to crit it as such but... the only bit that throws my eye is the reflection in the drop at the top, the right hand side of it isn't 'neat' enough if that makes sense. I'm only going by others like it that I have seen so don't take that too much to heart. I like the overall blue to it tho, suits this type of shot well imo. Like you say a good learning process for us all, looking forward to more from you and all the others and hey I'm hopefully going to take mine tomorrow/Monday so you can rip the **** right out of that one no worries my man

Living on the Edge ...
I was wondering how long before a pan appeared. At first I wasn't sure about the 'void' on the left, almost as tho more detail could be pulled out there because I'm sure it not blown. Looking at it again tho, it's the void that is the star, working like a tunnel in the shot pulling me in. Like you say its only when 'bigged up' that you really see it proper anyway.
