Lunch 13 is of a Grey-headed Kingfisher, taking off from a thorny bush in Tsavo East, Kenya's largest game park. Unlike most Kingfishers, this one is not aquatic and feeds on insects (like the one in this ones beak). It migrates at night and many are killed by flying into buildings & powerlines...
When this image was taken, we were staying in a camp beside the mighty Galana River and my biggest memory is of giant moths, literally hundreds of them, fighting to get into my pint of 'Tusker'. A saucer, placed on top of the glass was pushed off by these brutes. I have one, in a cigar tin, as a souvenir. If anyone would like to see it, let me have your name, address and postage costs!
