One of the steam train engineers at Grosmont station on the North Yorks Moors Railway, taking a moment to himself to take in the smells and sounds of a train pulling into the station. Even for such an unsentimental looking man, you can see that it's almost an emotional moment for him - it's in his blood.

Taken on a most enjoyable weekend with the Northscape guys. It was really good to meet Keith and Andy and the others on the workshop and learn from them. Excellent fun!

Any comments/criticisms more than welcome.

Have a look at the LARGE version.

Cheers,
Steve

Good photo, but would benefit from a mono conversion IMHO.

Dan, thanks for your comment. I did look at converting it to B&W, but the engineer ends up blending in too much with the train. I left it colour to allow him to stand out as the focal point.

Cheers,
Steve

How are you doing the mono conversion??? I can see the benefit of keeping the colour and I still think its a great shot, however i do think a mono conversion can be worked with the correct processing.

I suppose if you did convert it you could always bring the man out in an individual high contrast,, that should make him stand well out,,, However I like it the way it is,,

Thanks guys for your comments. I will have another go at getting a suitable b&w treatment when I get a chance later this week.

Cheers,
Steve

The large version is stunningly sharp. Brilliant photography, and I hope it does very well. Really nice work.

Nah I reckon you cloned him in - that jacket looks far too clean :o))

Bit of a belter Steve. Got the atmosphere just right - that bit of steam and the water dripping off the engine side. Spot on.

Good to have met you at the weekend. I look forward to seeing some more shots.

Thanks you four for your comments. To me this shot is about "atmosphere" and "capture the moment".

Nik - his jacket does look a bit clean doesn't it. Maybe I should clone in some additional dirt marks on to it?!

Cheers,
Steve

The large version just shows how you've captured the moment - looks like he can smell the bacon butties if you ask me.
