It's one of these shots that impress, technically very simple a nice easy shot for the day to grab, it's always hypnotic to see the deep colours and in this shot you have brought out the rich reds and yellows.
I like how you have kept in mind the use of the 3dimentional appearance, constructively speaking (I'm going to lose friends for say this now..lol) I feel the background blur filter has been overdone and is not consistent with DOF natural lens blur.
sometimes it's good to keep in mind the physics of the subject matter and equipment, your use of layers to create the illusion of heat across the top of the flam ball is cool.
I'm sorry to say but you are mistaken in your critique, as no background blur filter or layers were used or have been applied at all to this image, it was shot with a Canon 300mm f2.8 lens at an aperture of f2.8 & just about filled the frame hence the background blur, the only photoshop work done was to darken the exposure slightly to bring out the darker parts of the flame a little more & to resize & sharpen for displaying it on the web. cheers for the in depth comment it shows you looked at the image & thought about it so its np welcome to Ephotozine.
