Personally, if I'm going for a really sharp look, I play around with the sharpness settings until it looks oversharpened then back off slightly.
I'd say what you have done is about right for the size and subject in this image.

Saving lives
Composition's good, and gets my vote for that. (Just wondering if the orange is a bit too colourful? Or maybe give the rest of the image a complimentry colour/tint? Hope you don't mind my critique!)

Yarra at night
Many years since I last saw the Yarra! This is a nice photo... only comment I'd make is it would be nice if image extended downwards a bit more to show some more of those wonderful reflections.
