Children who are not trained from birth to grin for the camera, I suspect.
I agree with DaveU about the top of the frame. But I do like the space for the shadow bottom left, and the scrap of something or other left on the ground - it balances the image for me.

There's soemthing jsut slightly unsettling about this - which makes it even better than if the composition was completely resolved...
