Susan, don't take the following as being overly negative - you do have some of the right ingredients here to make for some good images. I would suggest however that you are perhaps centralising your subjects a little and not conisdering the rules of thirds in your composition.

Many people centralise due to dependance upon the central focus point (or worse, multi-point).. I believe that the 350D does only have a limited number of focus points but if you move them around to suit your composition you will see your images improve considerably.

You can select any one of nine focus points Susan, - its quite easy, but check your users manual first.
