Whilst on holiday in Malta last week we visited the Malta Falconry Centre at Siggiewi (www.maltafalconrycentre.com) and my next few uploads will be photos taken from there. The Centre was started 2 years ago and is privately owned by the Scicluna family. Doreen and her daughter Therese carry out the day to day running, helped by son Rene’ (when not at school) and at weekends by husband Rennie, who is in the construction business. The Centre has no financial government help and the project is therefore quite a thing for a private family to take on. Doreen is very aware of the problems of bird-hunting and killing in Malta, which still persists, in spite of the EU regulations. She arranges visiting parties of schoolchildren, believing rightly that the way forward is to educate the children into understanding the importance of allowing birds on a very popular migratory route a safe passage to their destinations. She herself has had birds from the Centre shot down when they have flown beyond the Centre air space!
On the day we visited, the falconer was ill, so Doreen was flying the birds for the very first time. V1 is Doreen with one of her Harris Hawks and V2 pictures a pair of juvenile homebred Harris Hawks. Doreen imported a breeding pair from Eagle Heights in Kent and they are breeding freely.
Best viewed large if you have a moment.
Many thanks for your C&Cs and ID on my Dragonfly upload (Scarlet Dragonfly (Crocothemis erythraea) – as always very much appreciated
