I love the texture throughout this image. I was photographing this area a couple of months ago

Its not very often I use HDR, but depending on what software you use, I find, in Photomatix Pro 3.0 (I could be behind the times with this version) keeping the Luminosity slider in the mid to high + end (to the right) and Light Smoothing set to medium, high or very high, seems to work for me in keeping the halo's at bay.

I hope this little bit of info is of some help
