Walking back from our sunny swimming hole under the rain forest canopy I saw a big bird move. My companion who has perfect vision could not make it out. My vision is not that great, [ I wear glasses ]. but I caught the shape of an ear so I knew it must be an owl. Sure enough, when a sunbeam did catch him we saw a huge owl but from quite a distance. He was passing through so only moments before he would move on. I had the polarizer on the lens. No time to fiddle, so Down shutter speed and Up ISO and gamble on getting an image. Not much of an image, yet enough to identify the great horned owl and win a permanent record of a thrilling encounter. He had a huge wingspan. This is America's largest owl.
