On the night of the third of March 1897, the Norwegian barque, SS Nornen, was caught in a terrific south-westerly gale in the Bristol Channel. The seas were huge and the storm blasted snow and sleet. The ship had tried to ride out the storm but its anchors had dragged and it was soon being driven into the shore. It's sails were torn to shreds and it was obvious to the crew who had fought the storm that their cause was lost.
All ten sailors and a dag were taken off safely aboard the burnham lifeboat John Godfrey Morris
