I was going to leave it a while before I put this up in a square format but people yesterday commented about it.
So interested if this is indeed stronger or if the other format is better....

Love this series of images Tommy, the skies are fantastic
Mark
I prefer this version as the fabulous sky has more prominence.
Dave
The square format suits this really well, Tommy. It has the effect of bringing everything much closer and also seems to give the sky much more impact against the dark silhouetted tree.
Big wow factor!
Of the two, however, I think that the original is a better considered and balanced composition, especially for the wider context and that enormous sky.
If I'd seen the square crop first I'd have been very impressed since it is, without doubt, a great shot. But seeing the two together I think that yesterday's shot edges it quite significantly. Obvious really, since you composed it that way! ![]()
I reckon that if you had intended a square crop at the outset, you'd perhaps have organised the elements and your position somewhat differently.
Nice to be able to get two outstanding shots out of a single frame!
Cheers
Bill
Wow! Hadn't seen yesterdays version but this caught my eye immediately and had to check the others. For me this is the best as the amazing sky is so prominent. I know 'the rules' say you shouldn't have the main subject slap bang in the middle but I think it works here. Well done for braving the cold but I think this shot is well worth it!
