You are so good at horse pictures, Una, especially on the jumps. It looks as if this one was moving, too, so I don't think you have a problem with that. It's a fine close-up of a working/sweating horse, but it's just the background that lets it down, the white area. To replace the whole background, which would be nice in a light colour, would risk losing the sweat drops, which is an integral part of the image. So, I think, if it were mine, I'd be prepared to spend a good bit of time filling in just the white areas with, say, blue for a sky. That also saves you the trouble of going round the mane, which would be a nightmare.
This is a very good "action portrait" of a horse. I agree with Chris and Pamela that it is a (slight) pity about the bright white sky. You could try replacing that bit of sky as it is virtually impossible to crop.
But on the whole I'd be inclined to leave the sky as it is. There is a slight blue colour cast which needs to be corrected.
A lovely shot under v difficult circumstances...i agree the sky distracts...you could try aduplicate layer and just a fill of a faint bluey grey sky (magic wand tool?) but you'd need to include the dappled bits bottom right so would take a bit of time.
The crop is great, the expression so intense. one tiny nigle is that the eye seems slightly less sharp than the tack...maybe just a bit of selective sharpening would help that..
but hey, as the hubby of a horsey one (my harshest critic) I'd love to get a shot like this, nice one
This is absolutely great Una, such a good shot full of expression and tension. Superb. I have no problem with the sky, I must say it looks more natural than the mod.

Great shot of a beautiful well cared for horse. If I may say, the sky (which is overexposed) is caused by the camera metering the sky area and causing the the highlights (in this case the sky) to be 'blown out'. To prevent this happening again, try 'partial metering' from a neutral colour, (say from the reddish brown in the face) instead of 'evaluative' (which i think you have used here).
This is a common problem with all digital cameras. I'm sure you are aware of most of this but I am just putting in my 'two penny-worth'.
