I know, I've had a go, with the limited DOF your going to struggle head on, try from the top, a tad less likely to frighten the things off as well, also watch where your shadow is and move slowly, they sense can air displacement.

Its easy to get close put a bit of dogs s!!t on the lens and they swarm round..lol
