Here is a shot of my baby boy in a pensive mood staring out of the window. I'm not sure whether I prefer it in colour or mono, would like to hear your thoughts.

Modifications welcomed as I am still learning PS and have only made a few slight tweaks on this shot.

Taken just using available light from bedroom windows.

Very nice, like the mono best.

First off its a really nice shot. The light is good, its sharp, and the window highlights in the eyes are terrific

I would start with the colour first, and suggest a number of variations that could be used to convert to B&W

I have loaded a set for review.

Mod 5 is your original version with:

Desaturated colour; reduced overall red. I find many shots of skin tend to be overly red, - its a personal opinion, and I often recude red using colour balance. Do you shoot in JPEG or RAW, - I would encourage RAW if you shoot JPEG, way more control over the shot post processing.

Mod 1 is the Mod 5 shot with shadow added on the left, - it isolates him better from the bg I think?

Mod 2 is Mod 1 with a small amount of diffuse glow distortion added to slightly soften.

Mod 3 is Mod 2 with a small amount of skin softening applied. I used a Kodak plugin, but you can use surface blur, or Gaussian blur, - but do not apply to the eyes.

Mod 4 is Mod 3 with a B&W conversion, and a little sepia toning.

All mods done in Photoshop CS3

A lovely sharp portrait , I prefer colour because of the background.
