Isolated these three boats in the busy harbour at Port Erin on the Isle of Man. I liked the recurring blue and white colours and the clarity of the water.

I thought the ropes would make good lead in lines.

I'd appreciated any ideas on how this shot could be improved.

Thanks for looking.

Attractive image, Elaine. Love the crystal clarity of the water, the colour, the reflections. Can't really see why anyone would feel the need to do anything to it. It's a clean simple image, and they're often the best kind.....though not always the easiest because with a simple image everything has to be right and there's nowhere to hide. I think you've succeeded admirably. Pet.

Nice image, exposure colour all look good. Water looks great too.

If only all those ropes came together to one point, but not to be.

I like your vertical format, the composition, reflections and ropes. Well seen and captured, Elaine.

The ropes are an excellent element. You thought about how to use them in your composition, and how they could affect the way the image is seen, pulling the viewer into the picture.
Your background is completely water, with no distractions, and you have allowed each boat some breathing space.

Three is an excellent number for photography, and comes under the Rule Of Odds, or The Rule of Three and Odd Numbers, which says that, whenever possible, it's a good idea to take pictures with odd numbered objects, and that by far the most popular odd number is 3. But any odd number of objects (generally speaking) is better than even numbers. Remember this is only a guideline and there are always exceptions. However, it tends to produce a more interesting composition compared to one that your eye can take in quicker by dividing it in half or grouping even numbers of objects.

I am going to be really picky now. In my modification I have cloned out the knot in one of the foreground ropes, simply because it captures my attention and stops my eye running straight to the boats. The only other thing I did was to use an automatic levels adjustment, simply to tone down the brightness of the whites on the top of the two top boats. It also gives a bit of a boost to the colours. See what you think.

Pamela.

Hi Elaine,

excellent picture (period/full stop/the end.)

I suspect you were standing on solid ground when you shot this. It looks like being shot from head level. The sea is used also as background and the horizon is not visible. Good thought.

Alternatively, (have you got the camera insured?) I would suggest you to wrap the neck strap around your arm, kneel, lower your hand at the rope level and take some shots from there. Horizon might be visible but, what the heck, the Earth isn't flat either.

Hi Pamela,

Thanks for your critique and the mod. I don't think you're being picky at all about the knot in the rope as it does hold the eye a bit Smile

Thanks for your help.

Hi Pablo,

What a great idea about taking a shot from rope level. I'm going to try that next time. Hopefully I'll not end up in the water..........lol Tongue

Thanks for your conment.
