My first attempt at shooting RAW.

One of my birthday roses.

I sprayed with water to create some points of interest, and focused on the droplet one third from the bottom in the middle. I lit the rose from the natural light coming in from my north facing kitchen window.

I'd love to know if the settings I have chosen were ok for the subject, and if you think this image is ok.

Please be gentle.......................remember it's my birthday!!

Happy Birthday!

These shots can usually look better shot with a macro lens, but this has done exactly what you set it up to do.

When shooting this type of subject, use Manual mode; set your aperture to smaller than f/11, - f/16 say for this lens, - but with a macro you could go to f/22 or less and still be sharp; use a solid tripod, remote shutter release or timer, and let if expose for the length of time it needs.

You can see that the drop you focused on is really sharp, and you can also see quite nicely that the depth of field is extremely limited, - theres a very small area in front and behind that drop thats in focus. The longer focal lengths, like youve used here, have much shallower dof at a given aperture and distance from subject that a shorter focal length.

So while its quite nice, - it would be better with either a deeper dof, - or more out of focus blur in the out of focus areas.

I will load a mod to show what I mean,

regards, and enjoy you birthday!

Willie

That's great Willie. I wasn't sure how to deal with the subject, I wanted to try to get a romantic, dreamy image but didn't manage it.

I can see with your mod how to achieve this in future - it looks very nice.

Thanks for the tips on the lens and 'f' stops etc. - it's very useful information for me.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Nice shot. I like what you have done, but would crop a little to shift the heart of the rose to the left. I wonder if the red should be a little more vibrant? Difficult to tell as there are so many potential reds - like it though.

Thanks Paul,

Your comments are appreciated very much. I think you're right and the centre of the rose would look good a bit further to the left.

All good tips to bear in mind in the future.

Ta very much.
