I like this shot because it depicts what the atmosphere was like that morning when we sailed down the Ganges towards Varanasi. At the time, sailing into the unknown, I was feeling calm, peaceful and relaxed with a sense of expectation for what we were about to see and experience in Varanasi - the most holy of cities for Hindus and reputed to be between 5 - 6 thousand years old!

I saw the boat ahead of us approaching the wierd looking tree and waited until I thought was the right moment before pressing the shutter button.

I haven't applied much processing here apart from cropping the top and bottom to put the boat on a third, burning in a little bit and adding the border.

I'd like to know if you think I could have improved the shot with the processing in any way.

The composition is spot on, but just feel it needs impact in the sense the light is flat, mind you maybe a closer crop giving the boat and tree more impact within the photo.
Will try a mod.
Mike.

Have uploaded a mod with a closer crop, not a great mod but maybe room for thought.
Mike.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the mod I like it. I'm thinking I may have spoiled the shot with the processing. I applied the warm b & w preset in Topaz.........

I have to pop out now for a couple of hours but will have another go at processing the shot and upload it later.

Thanks for your help Mike

I love the composition and the capture of soft haze - it reminds me of a collage of overlapping layers of tissue papers.
I'm not so happy with the warm toning - it looks muddy to me. I do prefer the cooler effect of Mike's Mod.
I think it needs rotating a degree clockwise - it's always difficult to check a misty horizon, but the give-away is the reflection of the boat's mast, which should be vertical and isn't quite.

I've uploaded a quick Mod - I rotated by 2 clockwise, and cooled down the toning a bit (but I prefer the effect in Mod 1). I have also cleaned the sky - there are several tiny blobs which could be birds in flight - impossible to tell. But also three definite dust bunnies.

Hi Elaine

When I saw this image on your blog it had the wonderful colours of the morning showing through the mist, while this image is still really good I think your right that you've lost some of the impact by using a B+W conversion.

I have just noticed the tree is dead centre in your image so I've cropped the image to place it off centre which also places your boat at approx the bottom third of the image. Hope you lke the crop, had to sacrafice your frame.

Hi Everyone,

Oh, I'm having a problem with this one.

I've had another go..................and uploaded another version!! Looking at the two versions/variants together I prefer my second one.

I've taken note of all your advice and tried to improve on my first attempt - don't know if I've been too successful though.

Thanks for all the mods and advice - I've picked up some good tips.

Cheers guys

Elaine

Hi Elaine
I agree I like your version 2 better I still think it could benefit from the golden colours of the morning sun to try and demonstrate this I have loaded another mod this is your version 2 image with a warm peach coloursed layer merged with it to give an almost sepia tone.

Let me know what you think.

I quite like what you did originally, but images like this are wide open to a lot of potential mods and endpoints. I might clone out that dead tree to the right of the boat.

Your sensor is very dirty. You really should clone them out you know. To be this obvious at f10 they must be quite big lumps. Try and change lenses with care, out of any wind and with the lens to be fitted in one hand, camera round neck. Lens off, lens on in less than a second! I never change lenses outdoors in wind.

I think I've said before, shoot a white wall at f22. And the correct exposure to get white and then look at an enlarged image. Any dust will show up.

The major problem with digital that film did not have is sensor dust.

In addition to the above I think it helps to keep the camera body 'open face down' whilst changing a lens.

Hi Erik, Paul and Frank (Evertonian),

Erik - I like your mod with it's warm color - I think that there are so many interpretations that could be created from this image, and I like your idea of loading the original and inviting ideas from members to unleash their creativity. I'll upload the original again and put a request on a thread in the main forum asking for ideas.

"Eeeeh Erik man, this ones deein me heed in lyke" Grin I'm going into hospital for a major operation tomorrow and will be home in a couple of weeks - so it'll be nice to see what the clever folk on EPZ have come up with.

Paul - I never thought of cloning out the tree as I thought it gave interest to the image..........it's another idea though so thanks for that. Also Paul, thanks for your advice on changing lenses.

Frank - Thanks for taking the time to comment with advice for changing lenses - I'll bear this in mind in future.

Cheers Guys.
