Just got back from a lovely holiday on Kos.

Went on a boat trip to Kalymnos and whilst everyone else sat at the harbour, I went on a wander up into the backstreets.

I took a few wide angle shots of the harbour from an elevated position, but I liked this shot the best, where I used my telephoto to zoom in. I didn't have a tripod, and thought I could keep a low ISO by steadying my camera against a fence - I'm not sure it worked though, as I think the shot could have been sharper. I did take a shot with a higher ISO but liked the composition of this one the best.

I'd be grateful for any opinions, advice, mods etc. and any honest opinions of whether this shot is any good or not.

Given yopur EXIF the shot should be sharp even with hand-holding - but you do still need to keep steady with any camera shot at all. Having said that looking at the picture before me it seems to be sharp enough although I haven't examined it like you seem to have done.

The composition is what bothers me - it does to me seem to be far too busy. Having those two sailing ships together makes it difficult to discern the one you would normally want, the nearer one. I think also for the ship to stand out we would need to be able to see it in its entirety rather than having it chopped of at the waterline.

Not a lot that you could do about the next two features but the edge inclusions LHS, particularly at the corner and the mast included in the lower RHS do reduce the viewability of the main feature. These holiday marinas and harbours contain a wealth of photgenic subjects, but the problem is that they are so crowded that it is difficult to get a half decent shot. However, you do have a nice reminder here of your holiday.

Putting everything aside, a lovely image, certainly one which is inviting., and gives one a sense of being there.

Seems sharp. Its a cacophony of colour and things to see. Its one shot where a wider lens might have been better, as you could have included more of the boats at the bottom, but you did well with what you had.

regards

Willie

Hi Frank,

Thanks for taking the time to let me know your thoughts.

I did wonder if the shot may too busy for some.

I like it though, as when I look at it I can still remember exactly what it was like being there on that day. I do take your point though, and the next time I'm faced with a scene like this I'll remember what you said about busy harbours - makes a lot of sense!

Your comments are much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Elaine

Hi Nathan,

Don't know if you'll see my reply to your comments as you seem to have been "removed".

Anyway thanks for taking the time - and your nice comments. Yes, that's just how I feel about the shot too.

Cheers

Elaine

Hi Willie,

Yes "cacophony" is a great word to describe the shot - wish I'd thought to include that word in the title somehow!

Wish I'd left more space at the bottom for the boat, but the Greek "Mythos" was taking it's toll on that day!

I'll take on board what you said about using a wide angle lens for this type of shot next time. Roll on my next "jollies"!!

Thanks as ever for your help.

Elaine

A perfectly good holiday scenic record. Compositionally the cut off boats and masts in the extreme foreground are a bit distracting and a clearer dockside area would act as a better base.
