Spotted during a morning stroll through the narrow winding streets of Varanasi.
I've added a vignette as I thought it would suit the scene.
I'd like to know if the processing works here.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Elaine I like the composition and the colours are great, the only thing I would be tempted to do be to make the shadows a bit less dark and drop the highlights a tad.....great shot though
Thanks.....I'll have a play around with the shadows and highlights as you've suggested.
Cheers, I'm glad you like the shot.
Hello Elaine , Overall I don't think there is much wrong with the image, compositions is good, colours are ok.
I think its a bit's late , I think what does let it down is using the flash you can see it in the paint work and the large cooking pot.
If possible next time try to use a tripod and natural light. saying all that its a canny shot
I do agree with you about the flash.
I much prefer using natural light but I was galavanting around India and it wasn't practical to take a tripod, which was a shame as I had to use the pop-up flash at times when the light levels were low.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and helping me with your good advice.
Like the strong colour contrasts...the eye is taken straight to the newspaper so don't think the shadows are too mucha problem here
An interesting sene which is well framed, the cooking pot neglected while he reads the news. The high contrast exaggerates the grime but using flash has given an intrusive feel. Nikons are so good at high ISO it may have worked better cranking that up and not using flash, then any noise in the image would add to the atmosphere!
Really good Elaine.
I see nothing wrong with using the flash in Aperture priority mode, and the camera/flash will only emit enough light to act as a fill light.
There is nothing wrong with using flash as fill in any mode providing you are within the camera flash synch speed. The trick is to balance the light and modern gear is very good at that. Is it better to use flash, go high ISO or get a blurred image. Use flash for me, that's what it's there for.
Nicely composed interesting shot. Colours seem a bit too rich to me. Try a tiny bit of desaturation.
I'm glad you like it - it shows a typical scene of the Varanasi back streets. I had to keep up with our group, which was walking quite quickly through the maze of streets, so this is just a quick snap really. It turned out ok though.
Thanks for your critique.
I decided to use the flash as I really wanted to ensure I got a sharp enough shot.
I wish I'd had time to fiddle with my camera settings and increase the ISO for a second shot of the scene without flash, but I only had the chance for a quick grab shot, so I made a quick mental decision that flash was the way to go.
In future, when I have more time to shoot scenes like this, I'll take on board what you said and try with both flash or high ISO to compare the results.
Thanks for letting me know you like the shot.
I'm pleased I used the flash as I wouldn't have gotten the shot.
I'll try a touch of desaturation as you advised - I think that may be a good idea.
Thanks for your critique.
I like this a lot, the balance of three simple elements - the man, the door and the bowl. The dark vignette isn't oppressive, and it does create a sense of intimacy, of the man being in his own private world.
I would like to rotate a couple of degrees clockwise, and also to try cropping a bit off the right side. The side of the door, running down to the bowl and the stain on the wall, seems to be a natural cut-off point, the space to the right seems redundant. But that's a minor point. I'll try a quick Mod.
Flash is fine for candids by the way so long as you remember that you probably won't get a second chance!
Usted tiene un trabajo documental maravilloso..Felicitaciones.
Thank you for you nice comments and congratulations.
I'm glad you like the shot.
