Walking on the beach at sunset I spotted these sandcastles and waited until some people entered the scene so I could use the sandcastles as foreground interest. I got down as low as I could to emphasise the foreground.
I'm not sure if I got the depth of field right, and wonder if the sandcastles should be sharper.
I would have liked the sunset to be more dramatic - but this was as good as it got on that evening.
I'd be grateful for opinions on this shot.

If you wanted the sunset to be the main theme to your image, it might have been better to have focussed on the central larger sandcastle using a smaller aperture. The resultant increase in depth of field should have given you your sharp foreground whilst still maintaining contact with the people interest and giving you all the colours you went to see...

Yes I see your point - I wish I'd taken more shots of the scene at different F stops.
Oh well your suggestion will stick in my mind and I'll remember the next time.

Read up some more on depth of field. You do need a smaller aperture for sure, but you also need to know where to focus, and thats approx 1/3 the way into the shot to get front and back sharp.
Ive loaded a mod with exposure decreased for a better sky, removed that large piece if sane and cropped.

I agree totally, the shot looks much better with the large sandcastle in the middle removed.
The sky is an improvement too.
