I was taking shots of the waves crashing against the rocks when a young lady came along and plonked her kayak right in front of me. At first I was a bit "miffed", until I realised she'd just presented me with a great photo opportunity.

I hope I've made a decent job of the RAW settings this time. I'd be grateful for your opinions.

Also I wondered if I should crop out a bit of the foreground. I've left it in as it's got some interest.

Yeah, I'd be miffed if somebody did that to me. Photographers often seem to think they own the world and a pet peeve is the people who expect everyone on a busy footpath to stop and wait for them to painstakingly line up and take their shot. In this case, there's no reason she couldn't have waited a few moments for you to do your stuff in what is clearly not a busy place; on the other hand, you were using a long-ish lens so maybe she didn't realise that's what you were shooting.

Having said that, I agree that, in this case, the intrusion was actually a great opportunity and I think you've made the most of it. Good light, good composition, lots of drama.

Dave.

Glad you like it Dave. I think you're right, and putting the kayak there was purely an accident - it's a free country and people can put kayaks anywhere they feel like!!

I had no right to feel a bit put out............really glad now that she came along though!!

Cheers

Elaine

A good composition and no problems with your foreground. The boat is a real bonus and a great bit of timing for the breaking wave.

I think the boat has presented you with a subject and you then composed well. this is a good image - far better than without the boat, when I would have been asking for a subject.

Red is always an eye-catcher in a photograph, Elaine, so I'd treat that lady as a godsend.
You have other interesting elements - the breaking wave, the rock face, the rocks in the sand, and the light is good, so all in all, a fine image.
Pamela.

Namaste Pamela,

Yes I think any other colour of kayak wouldn't have had the same impact.

Thanks for your time and your comments Pamela.

Cheers
