...well, actually not that easy! It insisted on not not turning round, and staying on the far side of the bush which just happened to be on the edge of a small ornamental lake. Google seems to suggest this is a Jersey Tiger Moth not a Garden one but I stand to be corrected. Taken in the grounds of Myddleton House in Enfield (N.London) which has Parker-Bowles connections. The caterpillars of this moth are the infamous Woolly Bears (irritant hairs). It's probably not the best image I've ever taken but I figured I should have at least one moth in my p/f. If anyone can help with the plant identification I'd be obliged - it was swarming with bees and Peacocks too, and looked like it might be worth having in the garden.

Iso400, 1/400s, f10, handheld, no flash, cropped image.

Many thanks to all who viewed/commented on my last (Alun and Mark for their UAs as well).

Dave

Lucky you to capture one with its wings partially open, Dave, all mine keep them firmly closed, and stay out of the sun Smile. Beautiful markings, and yes, it is a Jersey tiger moth. Carol

A rather breathtakingly beautiful photograph depicting this rather beautiful 'Jersey Tiger Moth?". Superb natural colour and marking, combined with brilliant crisp and fresh detail, certainly one yo admire.

All my attempts at butterflies (or colourful moths) have ended up on the cutting room floor, not that I have seen any up this way this year.
I think you have done a pretty fine job in capturing this prettily marked 'whateveritis', Dave, as it possibly outwith your comfort zone, certainly well outwith mine.
Ronnie.

Fantastic - I have never seen one of these and know what you mean about being camera shy, but you have certainly captured it in all its glory - and the flowers look wonderful, I would also be interested to know what they are ... Carol GrinGrinGrin

We just get cabbage whites on the whole, don't know why as we have not planted any cabbages this year - however its the flower that attracts my attention. The budlleia I had died last year, and we have missed that as an attraction for insects. A kind bird planted one in the middle of a veg patch and I am hand rearing it with care hoping to see the return of butterflies once it flowers SmileSmile
I digress - a very colourful "whatever it is"

For someone who thought a Tiger Moth was an old plane,
I am no use to give you an ID Dave !!
A well coloured shot.
Hang on,--it must be a Tiger Moth right enough as it has two wings too !!
Mick.

Great macro, Dave!Smile I could be wrong, but I think that we do not have such butterflies here, in a place where I live ....

With the shortage of Butterflies this year Dave you are very lucky to photograph one, I also have never seen one of these, it is a great shot, if I had tried this hand held you would be seeing triple images.

I have no idea about butterflies, moths, insects,.. and I still haven't tried micro yet, because of the tripod.. but it is a great encouragement to learn that it's an handheld image... the colour is nice, bright and beautiful..It seems that you've found something interesting..
Do you have any problem with auto EXIF,Dave? Or decided to put on manually? I lost the auto uploading once, and I was told by Bren it was the "Metadate" part setting on PS.
