It was only when my Sunday Morning cuppa appeared that I learned what mrswoolybill and SlowSong had uploaded this morning.
Although I already had another photo scheduled, so to speak, I couldn't bear to be left out.
Here is a genuine old advertisement pinned to the inside of the Gents' Facility on the station platform at Tanfield Railway, County Durham. Since it was a bit fly-blown and faded beneath its cellophane sheath, which produced a dreadful hot-spot, it required a fair bit of tidying up; apart from that I do not consider to be digital manipulation ![]()
Incidentally, while I am no lover of euphemism I can understand why the Victorians coined the phrase 'going to the lavatory' - it's far too awkward a mouthful to say 'Excuse me a moment, my dear, I must just pay a visit to the Elastic Valve Closet' ![]()
Many thanks to Barry BarryC123 for allocating his kind award to my posting yesterday. I have been a bit overwhelmed this last week!

Great nostalgic shot. The only sad thing about it is, I remember using that money!!
You and Moira appear to be loos canons today (sorry, coukdn't resist)! Great capture and yes, I remember that silly money system too.
Love the title Bill
and looking at these pic's, they havn't really improved THAT much since. Actually, they've overcomplicated the Dual flush Cistern, especially the Valve that controls the water going in, ours hasn't worked properly for ages, and even after taking it out many times and replacing it just as it should be, it only fills properly once, then back to a dribble after one Flush.
I'm sure you wanted to know that ![]()

There couldn't be a more apt name for the inventor of these items. That has always made me giggle.
Hope you are well Bill.
Tom.
well worth the effort and time Bill, Posters take you back in time, good info enjoyed reading it.
John
Thanks a lot for the most appreciated UA, Bill!
I've always had trouble with the plastic versions of such devises and always hated working to fix them. The old ones used to be made with proper materials and work without any trouble for years. This is a nice documentary which shows their mechanism and capacity that they were proud to reveal and specify.
The total cost of the basic versions of the three items amounts to £7 10s 6p. (That's without a loo seat...)
Here are some average Victorian wage rates for comparison:
An experienced housemaid could expect to earn £20 a year, a lady's maid up to £35 pa.
Men were better paid, a Post Office clerk earned £90 a year, a skilled workman around £100 pa.

Was this taken with a bog-standard lens, Bill? Wonder what today's equivalent of those prices are?
At least you kept to the Gents' Facilities, and did not wander into the opposite sexs' facilities, like certain others have edone in the past in the search for images.![]()
Malc
A very informative upload Bill and a nice bit of tidying around the lavatory there.![]()
Andy
A good job done here on your toilet cleaning Bill!
These products look much more interesting and ornate than their modern equivalents ![]()

Oooo, I would have killed for a copper air regulator!!![]()

I'm glad you did not waste the opportunity to upload this one Bill, an image deserving of a WC award if ever I saw one. I think the standard of the jokes and puns has really gone down the toilet lately, I ended up reading them all to see how they would pan out. I can imagine if someone was feeling flush they would buy all the items listed on the advertising poster
