f2.8 - 1/30th - ISO320

I decided to retain more of the blue tint in this one via the white balance adjustment during RAW conversion. Lighting was from two Minolta 5400HS flashguns (one on 1/16th the other on 1/8th power) triggered wirelessly. The directional quality, present in the original but not strong enough for my liking, was amplified with a blended 'lighting effects' layer. I like painting with cloned fabric so I've done that again here and some of the colour and texture is pulled from digital noise. I've experimented with - and been criticised for - that particular technique on a number of occasions! Anyway, my intention was to create more of an illustration than a photograph if that makes sense. I'm including the original unedited shot for comparison - always a dangerous thing IMO Smile

When a shoot offers me the chance to experiment more artistically I usually make the most of it. Rather than work each shot the same way I try different things. There are technical issues with this image (in both forms) but they do not really concern me. I'd be more interested to hear what anyone thinks on an artistic/aesthetic level.

I don't for a single minute pretend to understand how you did this - but I do love the result! (and the dress...) Magical. Carol

That is more than a bit good! I do like the original, but the manipulated one is just something else entirely! Its great to see the comments on how you went about creating the end result too.

I think the only thing I would be inclined to do would be tone down the green of the moss a fraction, it just jumps out a little too much on my screen (though I admit that may be my screen at fault since I am on the laptop at the moment).

Absolutely fantastic picture though - deeply envious that I can't take shots like this Wink

Superb work indeed !

Thank you, Carol. Actually...I forgot to say in the description that the 'dress' is just a piece of fabric that Ruby arranged around Hannah Smile

Thank you, Rob. Funny you should say that about screens...this looks ok on my laptop but a little too much on the desktop so I will tweak it a touch. Cheers Smile

Simon this an astounding looking photo. The way the dress is arranged over the tree base is perfect and the whole concept is a very magical looking finish. Orpheus In The Underworld and all that type of magic. Beautiful colour processing too. Great to have been able to compare to the original also. My friend is an illustrator, books etc. and thinks this is very illustration looking.

Version 1 for me, it has real impact and vibrancy.

I have a daughter in-law who is a goth and heavily into fairies and a wife who paints images like this onto china so your image was an instant hit as far as I was concerned.

I just got my wife to have a look and her comments were that she liked what you have done but that, for her, it seemed to be an image of two parts. She loved what you have done with the lower half of the image and, in particular, the ethereal look of the dress but felt that from the waist up the image looked to "Solid" (she couldn't express it any better but it looked maybe too realistic? )

Gets my vote

Thank you, Brian. I think I know exactly what you and your wife mean. I think the top half is more photographic than the bottom half - more realistic as you say. I guess in that respect this image is a good example of the two directions in which I am pulled. If my artistic (and Photoshop) skills were stronger I would do more manipulations and more digital paintings. You've certainly made me think and that's partly what this Discussion Group is designed to encourage. Cheers Smile

im liking this, i like taking people more these days but rare to do so outdoors,
what i like here is the way that the dress seems to eminate from the root system of the tree and connects the model directly with the forest. the colour toning was quite inspired and makes a significant diference to the original. she seems to be floating which is emphasised by the tight crop over the head. the green is a bit vivid but where reality blends with fantasy then it matters little.

out of my league so what can i say
Phil
