A combo of dark and light exposures, Gaussian layer set at something like 5%, warmed up the sky a little, and slapped a filter layer over the sand in graduations

I like this kinda shot - makes you wander what he's (you?) are looking at. plenty of atmospherre, the cooler tones add a bleakness to the whole thing.

All I'd question is the gradation from blues to the more orangey sand in the foreground.

I think the strength is in the blues, so the orange doesn't really add to this for me. Maybe it it supposed to imply that the man's walked from the safety of the warm reds to the danger of the sea and cool blues?

Still, a striking shot in my eyes

Hmm, I kind of agree with Ade, perhaps a smaller area of the filter on the sand, but don't get rid of it!
