Today, the Sony World Photography Awards announced the shortlist for the prestigious Student Focus competition. Entries from 230 educational institutions worldwide were received, but only 10 images could make the shortlist, selected by a panel of judges from the World Photographic Academy. Student Tom Parker is flying the flag for the United Kingdom with his image titled: "Contemporary culture is not just characterised by consumerism, but is also about obsolescence and waste" which you can view below alongside the other nine shortlisted entries.

The overall winner will be announced at the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London on 23 April 2015.
