10 Seconds by Polly Penrose

At the new Hoxton Gallery, a short exhibition is now on display that features work by an amazingly dedicated and passionate photographer who's worked for British fashion photographer Tim Walker and her name's Polly Penrose. From today until the 8th of May, you can see massive prints of Polly's work titled '10 Seconds' on display at the gallery and Stuart Fawcett recently went along to the preview to record some of the flavour of the exhibition.

The title for the exhibition actually comes from the time Polly has from pressing the shutter button until she has to be 'in pose' for the shot to fire. You see, all of Polly's pieces are self-portraits but they're a little different to the conventional self-portrait as Polly's style is constrained by access to locations and her desire of 'responding to the space' which means using the situations and the props present in each location and not pre-planning the shoots.

Places that became available include flats she's helped renovate, friends houses and studios. As a result, the images she produces often have themes based on available resources and time. She only shoots her own ideas and does not take requests or suggestions.

This shot in the middle is the only one in the exhibition that shows movement, this is caused by the difficult positions in which she forces herself into and the lack of available time. Polly comes from an artistic family and with her early years as a gymnast, has some good perception of shape and form as well as the flexibility and strength to produce the poses.

Her family is very proud of her and her increasing fame; they say she is left-eyed despite being the only right-handed family member.

The Hoxton Gallery is Owned by Kevin Martin who himself is a passionate architectural photographer and loves the presentation of art in many forms. The Gallery is in an old post office off Old Street with a main large display area, a cosy inner area and what I'm calling a pirates den which works well as a VIP crash room for after party gatherings. I'm sure there will be many more very interesting exhibitions to come at this location but for now, click out Polly Penrose's website and the Hoxton Gallery website to learn more about Polly's work.
