In the words of Ted Vieira, 'there are no hard and fast rules for street photography' but in his insightful video, Ted's shared his thoughts on the genre, as well as 10 tips, he hopes will guide you in the right direction in the above video.
Street photography is something that's accessible to everyone as you don't need models, lights or indeed a studio to try it out. You just need you, your camera, a decent pair of shoes to walk in and your imagination. As Ted explains, street photography is a great exercise for photographers who want to work on composition as well as learn how to think on their feet a little more, plus it gives you the opportunity to record a little bit of history for others to look back on in years to come.
When it comes to street photography skill and style, there's plenty to discuss but Ted managed to narrow his thoughts down to ten top tips which includes:
- Getting out and taking photos regularly
- Be respectful of people
- Slow down
- Go out at night
- Find good locations (let the action evolve in front of you)
- Look for the 'cool' light
- Capture portraits
- Try different angles
- Find a story
- Look at the work of other street photographers
