When you're looking for a travel tripod there are a few key points that you'll want to bear in mind before making the final decision:

  • Size - If you're travelling a long distance and want to stow the tripod for part of the journey, being able to fit it in, or onto, a backpack will be a key feature. You can actually get tripods that compact down to 30cm or less, which will easily fit into a hiking rucksack.
  • Material - Different manufacturing materials will make a difference to the weight of the tripod. Carbon fibre is currently the lightest material that tripods are made of however this comes at a premium - aluminium is a more affordable material that's still lighter than traditional metals. Some will feature magnesium elements like joints and heads to further make them lighter.
  • Compactness - Tripods with lots of leg sections tend to be longer when folded, so this is something to bear in mind if overall length is a factor. Some tripods fold their legs upwards, encasing the head, further shaving inches off the length. Look at how the tripod folds when choosing.
  • Flexibility - In a travel tripod, you want versatility - something that can adapt to what you need anywhere. Look for interchangeable feet, tilting centre columns and ball heads to enable you to take pretty much any terrain and scene on.

ePHOTOzine's Recommended Travel Tripods

Some of these tripods were included in our 'best tripods round-up', however, that round-up included more than travel tripods. Here are the travel picks:

Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod -

VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod

The VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod is compact, lightweight and can be easily turned into a monopod which makes it great for holidays and trips. You can also use a leg as a selfie stick or vlogging arm should you make YouTube videos. We can definitely see it as an accessory younger photographers, influencers and bloggers will find really useful but like-wise, those who want a lightweight support that will easily fit in a carry-on bag so they have a tripod to use while travelling will also like it. It is a little wobbly at full height but put a weight bag on it and it's really stable. You can also pop the spike feet on it if you're taking photos on terrain that you can use them on which will further add stability to the support.

The Bluetooth remote shutter trigger is a great addition as it means you can capture family group shots with you actually in the photo instead of behind the lens and it's also a great tool for those who do pieces to camera for vlogs. You also get a smartphone adaptor so your smartphone will fit safely and securely on the tripod/monopod/vlogging stick.

Overall, the VEO 3GO 235CB is quick to set-up, it can be used with cameras or smartphones and is the ideal size/weight for travelling.
