3 Legged Thing Ray Tripod Kit Review: Three Legged Thing Ray Tripod

Quick Verdict

The Ray Tripod Kit from 3 Legged Thing is an impressive ultra-compact carbon fiber travel tripod that has all of the premium qualities and robustness you expect from a 'full-size' tripod without the bulk. It also looks great and converts into a really handy tabletop tripod or monopod, too, which means you're getting three tripods for the price of one. The Airhed VU is a lovely addition to the tripod, as are the Vanz feet (sold separately), but the tripod on its own is also a great buy. For staycations, foreign vacations or simple days out, the Ray Tripod Kit from 3 Legged Thing would be an excellent addition for your kit bag.

+ Pros

  • It looks cool
  • Weight
  • 30KG load capacity
  • '3-in-1' design
  • Great accessories

- Cons

  • None!

3 Legged Thing creates some really cool looking tripods that have punny names and interesting packaging but as well as offering something eye-catching in terms of design, they also create robust tripods that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with more expensive 'pro' tripods and as a result, they've become a force to be reckoned with in the photography accessory market.

To keep the momentum going, the company has released a new Legends Range which features 2 new tripod designs and a ball head which can be purchased separately or as a kit with the new tripods. In the collection are the 'Ray', 'Bucky' and Airehed VU ball head. Plus, you can purchase various shoes for the tripods so they can be used on different terrain or indoors.

On test, we have the Ray Tripod Kit which features the Airhed VU ball head and we also have the 'Vanz' footwear which can be used on the Ray tripod to convert it to a tabletop tripod which can be purchased for £59.99.

The Legends range will be available to buy from 18 August 2020 and the Ray Tripod Kit is priced at £389.99 or you can purchase just the tripod for £319.99.

3 Legged Thing Ray Tripod Kit Features

3 Legged Thing Ray Tripod Kit Review: Three Legged Thing Ray Tripod

Ray is an ultra-compact carbon fibre travel tripod that's billed as being just as robust as Pro tripods but without the extra KGs so basically, you get the stability you want without having to practise your bicep curls at the gym in preparation to carry it. As the name suggests, this makes it ideal for travelling and weekends away and as it can be turned into a monopod or tabletop tripod, it's also really practical.

It has a payload of 30kg and there are 5 section legs as well as a 2 section column. Plus the legs feature O-Pads on the locks for better grip, anti-rotation shims to stop tubing rotation so legs remain locked in place, rapid latch levers to quickly change leg angles with and detachable legs so you can turn your tripod into a monopod or tabletop tripod.

Other features include an Airflow Canopy which features milled holes/shapes to reduce weight, a multi-section centre column, 3 Legged Thing's patented Tri-mount plate and it's also compatible with a variety of 'footwear' which includes spikes, steel grips and standard tripod feet.

As you expect from 3 Legged Thing, the colour options are really cool with Earth Bronze or Metallic Slate Grey available with contrasting accents.

We're reviewing the kit version so as well as Ray we also get the Airhed VU ball head which has a cool viewing panel so you can see the internal workings of the ball head. It's supplied with a QR Octa, Arca-Swiss compatible plate, has a payload of 40kg and is available in Ocean Blue or Metallic Slate Grey. It's constructed from magnesium alloy that's of aerospace quality and is pretty light, weighing in at 366g.
