3D Photos Now Available On Facebook: 3D Photos Now Rolling out on Facebook and in VR

Facebook has started rolling out a 3D photo feature that, as quoted by the social media giant, gives users 'a new way to share memories and moments in time with a fun, lifelike dimension in both News Feeds and VR'.

The feature works with images captured with smartphones that have dual lenses (such as the iPhone XS) so when you're in portrait mode, you can create bokeh in your photos.

Once you've captured an image in portrait mode, you just have to share it as a '3D photo' on Facebook and those who view your photo will be able to scroll, pan and tilt it, giving it a 3D feel.

Everyone will be able to see 3D photos in their News Feeds and via VR now, while the ability to create and share 3D photos will be rolled out gradually to all Facebook users.

For those wanting to use the new feature, here are a few tips from Facebook on how to become a '3D photo pro':

1. Create Layers
3D Photos use the depth maps that are stored within 'Portrait' photos and you’ll get the best results if your main subject is three or four feet away, and to really make it pop, try to capture scenes with multiple layers of depth - something in the foreground and something in the background.

2. Keep Contrast In Mind
You’ll get more of the 3D effect when your photo's subject has contrasting colours.

3. Use Texture
Some materials and subjects make better 3D photos than others. You’ll get the best results from subjects that have some texture to them, have solid edges, and aren’t too shiny. Try to avoid transparent objects like clear plastic or glass, as they aren’t always accurately captured by depth sensors.
