ePHOTOzine recently got to ask some burning Hoya, Cokin and Kenko filter questions and get them answered by the experts over at Intro2020. If you want to know more about filters have a look at our Q&A below:

What do you think the most important accessories are for camera buyers? What is your best selling filter?
In answer to both questions, a UV filter. It offers protection for the lens, and is a cheap insurance policy against scratches etc. A double benefit is that it cuts UV, particularly at high altitude. For example if you're high up on a snowy mountain, shadows will often appear blue, and a UV filter will return this to black. They are particularly good value, although a high-quality filter is important especially with HQ glass, otherwise they could degrade your image quality. We saw this in our recent comparison of UV filters.

HD Protector Filter

Are the HOYA HD filters the only toughened glass protective filters you sell?
Yes – and despite there being specific clear “Protector” filters, people still prefer to buy UV filters – so people can buy a HOYA HD UV filter, and benefit from the toughened glass as well. See our recent test which included the HOYA HD Protector Filter.

Are there any plans to introduce an ND filter stronger than 10 stops?
It's doubtful. There's no major reason to have more than 10 stop as you are able to get long exposures by adjusting the ISO, aperture, etc and if needed you can also stack filters.

What are the unique features of Hoya/Cokin filters compared to competitors?
Hoya filters come from the world's largest optical glass manufacturer – HOYA is all about quality. Cokin was invented for stills photography by Jean Coquin and introduced in 1978.

The new Cokin NUANCES filters are said to be neutral, along with the HOYA PROND filters, how difficult is it to manufacture truly neutral density filters? There seem to be a lot of other brands that are out there with a colour cast?
It is extremely difficult which is why it's taken so long to bring to market. It's really important for us to produce neutral density filters that are actually neutral. For example, the HOYA Variable Density filter (along with most other Variable density filters) isn't actually neutral, so Hoya didn't put neutral on the label as they do not want to mislead customers. They aren’t neutral if they have a colour cast, yet they are often called “Variable Neutral Density” filters anyway.

What is the cause of colour cast and do you have any tips to avoid this/remove it?
Use a Hoya PROND or Cokin Nuance filter and you can avoid the colour cast, and then you don't need to worry about correcting the image later.

Lenspen FilterKlear

What do you recommend for cleaning filters?
The Lenspen FilterKlear is specifically designed for the flat surface of lens filters. Lens cloths can just move grease around rather than remove it.

Have mirrorless cameras changed how people think about filters?
People use filters the same way but just using smaller sizes. When Digital was introduced, this really changed the way people took photos, people could see results straight away, giving instant gratification and meaning you no longer had to wait for film processing / printing.
