The Hoya filter system is one of the leading brands in the filter world today. Hoya filters are the screw in variety, allowing you to directly attach them to the front of your lens without using a filter holder.

How do I know what size filter I need?

Filters from Hoya are available in a wide range of sizes, allowing you to cater for your whole lens collection from wide-angle to macro lenses. Most Hoya filters are available in the following sizes:

  • 39mm
  • 46mm
  • 49mm
  • 52mm
  • 55mm
  • 58mm
  • 62mm
  • 67mm
  • 72mm
  • 77mm
  • 82mm
  • 86mm
  • 95mm

It's simple to find what size your lens is - look for a symbol that's a circle with a line through it. The number next to this will be the filter size you need.

What types of filters does Hoya produce?

Hoya produces a wide range of filters, covering pretty much all your needs. Here is a quick roundup of the filter ranges Hoya produce and what they can be used for, although much more detailed information on the uses of individual filters is available in other articles on FilterZone:

HD Filters - Hoya HD filters offer the best quality and performance. In the HD filter range you'll find circular polariser filters, ideal for cutting out unwanted reflections, protectors, which help to shield your lens from scratches and bumps without affecting image quality, and UV filters which can be used to block UV light and alsio as a lens protector. 

PRO1 Digital Filter Series - These filters are designed exclusively for digital cameras. In the range you'll find circular polariser, UV and protector filters, as well as more specific filters including those for creating starburst effects, getting closer to your macro subjects and soft gradation in images. 

PROND Filters - This range is designed for pro imaging and cinema use. The range is composed of Neutral Density filters of varying strengths. To put it simply, these filters allow to use a slower shutter speed and/or aperture even in bright daylight. The strengths in the range are as follows:

  • PROND2 - 1 stop light reduction
  • PROND4 - 2-stop light reduction
  • PROND8 - 3-stop light reduction

  • PROND32 - 5-stop light reduction

ND Filters - Hoya produce a wide variety of ND filters including soft ND graduated, hard ND graduated, as well as a variable density filter fo those who want to be able to change the amount of stop reduction without changing filters.
