Last night, Stuart Fawcett went along to the 32nd awards party and exhibition of the Association of Photographers. You also can go along to the exhibition if you're quick as it's on for 3 more days, there is even some free training on offer if you check out their website.

Now, if like me you've not heard of the AOP before then you'll also be surprised at the size of the exhibition and the amount of entries. The AOP states that it is a UK based Membership Organisation that promotes and protects the rights of photographers. They also say: "AOP is a not-for-profit company that exists as a lobbying, promoting, educating and networking organisation for professional photography."  That's why, perhaps, some ePHOTOzine members have not heard of them before as it's a kind of union/pressure group for professional photographers. The membership levels mostly reflect a traditional career development in photography from student to full member. Other benefits of the AOP are equipment & liability insurance and even mentoring. If you want to go pro then maybe they can help your journey and you might be among the many images at the next awards exhibition, just a tiny selection of those images are below.

Each awards category were presided over by curators from the likes of Saatchi & Saatchi, The Sunday Times Magazine, other photographers, art buyers and a commercial film producer. One of those curators was Carrie Scott, an independent curator and arts consultant. Carrie was in-charge of the non-commissioned fashion & beauty category. Her career type was new to me but she is consulted for developing compelling exhibitions and collections, and has worked closely with fashion photographers including Nick Knight, David Sims, Lord Snowdon and Walter Hugo & Zoniel to establish strong and sustained print markets on their behalf. Having someone like Carrie may well be a key differentiator as you try and build your brand and find your market.

Other Guest members included original members Gwen, Clive and Adam who remember a £10 joining fee and have seen decades of AOP awards; Gwen was given a special award as a long-serving senior member of the AOP and she's also retiring from her role as the Executive Director of Business and Legal Affairs.

The AOP awards are sponsored and supported by big photo partners such as Hasselblad, Direct Photographic, Holborn Studios, Red Digital Cinema, MOT Models, ShootLDN, Fixaation, Photoblock, the print space and Leica.

Here are Giles, Tim and Chris from Hasselblad giving us a Smile.

The Formal part of the awards ceremony was introduced by Robert Elms a writer and broadcaster with the BBC and husband of the photographer Christina Wilson. Naturally, he flattered the photographers saying they were worth a thousand of him as a picture paints a thousand words. However, to keep us in check, he also jested by calling us thieves of light as we steal a moment away for perpetuity. Robert also pointed out that technology now allows us to tell both fact and fiction with our images but reminded us that pictures should still tell a story for interest.

He then Thanked Gwen Thomas as the outgoing chair of the AOP and Steve Knight of the AOP gave Gwen thanks and flowers on stage.
