The winner of the 2018 ZEISS Photography Award has been announced and a series titled 'Garden of Delight' by photographer Nick Hannes has taken the top title.
Shot over five trips in 2016 and 2017, Hannes' winning series examines leisure and consumerism in Dubai. Each photograph was planned, with locations ranging from a prototype underwater holiday villa to a subzero bar in a Dubai shopping mall. In the work, the photographer explores ideas around globalisation, capitalism and raises questions about authenticity and sustainability.
Chosen from nearly 90,000 entries by photographers from more than 140 countries, Hannes' work was praised by the jury for its unique character and narrative. The 2018 ZEISS Photography Award judges also recognised nine further series of works and shortlisted the following photographers:
- Toby Binder
- Sarah Blesener
- Snezhana von Buedingen
- Stephanie Gengotti
- Tadas Kazakevicius
- Mark Leaver
- Gowun Lee
- Stefano Morelli
- Kicia Randagia
The work of all shortlisted photographers and Nick Hannes will be exhibited at Somerset House, London as part of the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition from 20 April - 6 May 2018. Last year, a fellow Belgian also won the 2017 ZEISS Photography Award with a photography series about life in remote and sparsely populated villages on the Faroe Islands.
