Spotlight on New Lightroom Features

By John Riley

Adobe are releasing new features for all Lightroom variants, be it Cloud based, Mobile or Classic, the most radical perhaps being the introduction of Video Editing. This is not full video editing, this is no competition for Adobe Premiere Pro or Rush, but the ability to handle the video file in the same way as a still image. That is, adjustments via all the normal tools for contrast, brightness, colour control and so on. In this way, video footage can seamlessly be inserted into a slide show, for example, and the colour balance and sharpness can be blended to perfectly match the stills images.

The final tweak available is also the ability to trim the start and end points of the inserted video, so any spurious false starts or ends can be tidied up. This is not the same as being able to edit together various lengths of video footage, but it is nonetheless an attractive and useful bonus in the making of straightforward slide shows. This can also be synched to a smartphone for onward distribution via social media as desired.

  • Presets

There is a significant simplification now available when dealing with Presets, a simple Amount slider. This can increase or decrease the intensity of a Preset without having to become involved in using multiple sliders.
  • Adaptive Presets

AI is now available with new adaptive presets. This enables smart selection of areas within an image and the effects can then be applied and adjusted to just these areas. Prime examples could be faces and skies.
  • Premium Presets

There are also new Premium Presets:
    • Black and white portraits
    • Group portraits
    • Concert photography
    • Video
  • Lightroom Discover

Photo sharing is built into Lightroom and now added is the option of allowing others to edit and upload their own versions of images. These are stored with the original photographer, who can accept the various edits or not.
  • Red Eye Removal

A much requested feature, now found in the healing panel. This has already been in the Classic version. However, AI now enables Auto Correct and one click will remove the red eye.
  • Compare View

Two files can now be displayed side by side, or top and bottom, to enable comparisons to be made.
  • Batch Copy and Paste

The subject is selected, the sky perhaps is selected and the copy/paste can be applied at the same time to multiple files. Also available at group level is Invert Mask.
  • Search and Filter

In Discover, a search has now been added for people.
  • Lightroom Classic

Now has Select Subject in Masking and an amount slider for local masking adjustments.
  • Loop Info Overview

The Library and Develop modules are no longer linked, so displayed info does not have to be replicated in an identical way in both.
  • Export

Now runs on the GPU to enable an improvement in performance.

In summary, a great selection of new and useful features for all Lightroom variants.
