We take a closer look at one of the new tools featured in today's Lightroom 5 beta announcement.

Adobe have today announced that the Lightroom 5 beta is now available and we thought we'd take a look at some of the new tools available in the popular piece of software. We understand that it's a public beta and not a finished product but we thought it would be interesting to see how the new tools so far perform.
The Advanced Healing Brush (Spot Removal) isn't a new tool that's been added to the Lightroom 5 beta, however the tool has had a few modifications which makes it easier to selectively remove objects, dust spots etc. from your images.
In Lightroom 4 the Advanced Healing Brush couldn't be 'painted' with. Instead, each click of your mouse button applied one, circular shape. This made the tool rather restrictive and if you had an image where the tool needed to be used on a few areas, it was often easier to switch to Photoshop to carry out the work rather than using Lightroom.
In the Lightroom 5 beta the size and opacity of the tool can still be adjusted the same way as in Lightroom 4 and the software still samples from other areas of the image, as it did previously when this tool was active, to 'fix' the image with. However, instead of having to spend time clicking one spot removal circle at a time, users can now 'paint' with the brush allowing them to adjust a larger and irregular area of an image in one go. To use the tool, click and drag your mouse to create a white shape over the part of the image you wish to adjust.
Lightroom automatically selects the area of your image to 'sample' from but you can click and drag the selection to another part of the shot if you don't feel the selection the software has chosen fits. If the tool's overlay isn't visible or it is and you want to hide it, hit 'H' on your keyboard.
When using tools like the Advanced Healing Brush (in any software) it's important to be careful with your selections so the areas of the image you're removing and replacing don't stand out because the pattern is too repetitive or you've 'sampled' from an area of the shot that doesn't 'fit' with the area surrounding your selection.
Once you're happy, hit 'Done' to return to the Develop module.

As can be seen in your illustration the automatic selection is not very good at all
Hopefully this will be improved upon before it gets released.

The software is in beta so we could see improvements on this. As I could move the area Lightroom 'sampled' from I didn't find it too much of a problem but it would be nice if it did choose an area a little closer to what was selected.
