AOP self-promotion season - Self-promotion can take on a multitude of forms, varying from exhibitions and advertising regimes, source books and new media to self promotion in its traditional capacity. Or the more informal approach of wining and dining - concentrating on establishing a lasting rapport with the client.

November marks the beginning of the Association of Photographers’ self-promotion season, consisting of seminars and workshops exploring the various marketing tools that are an intrinsic part of every photographer’s career.

Each photographer places a different value on self-promotion to the next. Herb Ritts attended marketing school alongside photography college, highlighting the significance of self-promotion to some, who consider it as much a part of their job as pushing a shutter button. Others, such as Tim Simmons, have a more laissez-faire approach and can employ agents to promote their work with conviction.
Self-promotion is an evolutionary process. Photographer Tim Simmons cites his personal project ‘Intervention’ as one method of marketing, albeit inadvertent, which has been particularly successful for him “it wasn’t done out of the thought that I could use it to promote myself. I did it because I wanted to.” No particular marketing tool will have a definite outcome, no method leads to clear-cut success, “individuals have to really experiment for themselves” in order to determine which strategy will help their photography thrive not just survive.

Self promotion is often a challenging task and for freelance photographers it can be crucial to the success of their business. This season of seminars, workshops and discussions will explore successful self-promotion methods in the current competitive and dynamic climate. Hear from photographers who have travelled the various roads – what they achieved, why and how, and then what further opportunities presented themselves. Pick up tips and tricks and find out what creative industry professionals are looking for.
