We all know that modern photo editing software means that many of the effects that filters provide can be replicated easily without using them but does this mean that filters are completely redundant in the modern world of landscape photography?
Photographer Thomas Heaton has looked into this and has created a video discussing this issue. In the video, Thomas goes through the common filter types including polarising filters and ND filters, discussing their use and how important they are.
Perhaps more interestingly, he also looks at how their effects can be replicated in software and whether this is actually a better option. Perhaps not, he argues, because post-processing eats into precious shooting time, and those that aren't technically minded won't enjoy trying to replicate the effects.
Tom has several filter brands on test and he looks at all of them, going through the pros and cons of each and what they are used for.
Take a look at the video, above, to find out what Tom's final verdict is.
