Asus ZenFone 6 Vs OnePlus 7 Pro: Which One Takes Better Photos?

When it comes to smartphone design, the Asus ZenFone 6 and OnePlus 7 Pro are definitely two smartphones that are trying to buck the trend. They may have the usual shape we now expect smartphones to have but that's where the similarities end as pop-up/flip-style cameras make them stand out from the crowd.

Of course, the quirky cameras are probably the main/first reason why someone will pick one of these smartphones up but they also have decent screens, interesting camera specs, good battery life and a price that will still save you some money when compared with other flagship smartphones from brands such as Samsung and Apple.

The Cameras

ZenFone 6 OnePlus 7 Pro (4)

Asus ZenFone 6

  • Flip Camera: 48MP f/1.79 main camera and 13MP f/2.4 125-degree ultrawide secondary camera
  • Phase Detection Auto Focus, Motion Tracking

One Plus 7 Pro

  • 16mp f/2.0 pop-up selfie camera
  • 48mp f/1.6 wide-angle standard camera, with OIS
  • 16mp f/2.2 super wide-angle camera with PDAF
  • 8mp f/2.4 telephoto camera, with OIS

The standout feature of the Asus ZenFone 6 is, of course, the flip camera module with its 48MP Sony main camera and 13MP 125-degree ultrawide secondary camera. When using the main camera, you can capture 48MP or 12MP images and as the camera unit flips, it's also used as the selfie camera.

There's no zoom but you do get access to Phase Detection Auto Focus and motion tracking. Plus, there are quite a few photo modes built in.

The OnePlus 7 Pro feature a triple camera setup which gives you access to an ultra-wide-angle 16mp f/2.2 camera, 48mp f/1.6 wide-angle (standard) camera (so you can capture 48MP images) and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera. On the front, and the most interesting/cool feature of the OnePlus 7 Pro, is the pop-up selfie camera. The specs are a bit generic, though, giving you a 16mp f/2.0 camera.

"With cameras that flip or pop-up, both the One Plus 7 Pro and Asus ZenFone 6 certainly have a fun factor that grab your attention."

Optical Image Stabilisation is built into the telephoto and standard lens while the super wide-angle uses Phase Detection Auto Focus. 3x optical zoom is built in along with several photo modes.

With parts that pop-up or flip around, you might be concerned at how sturdy they are and the selfie camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro is actually stronger than it looks. Even when wiggled, there wasn't much give and if the OnePlus 7 Pro detects it's falling, the selfie camera automatically goes back into the smartphone's body which is reassuring.

The Asus ZenFone 6 has a similar trick, rotating back into the phone body if it senses a drop but the unit doesn't feel quite as reassuringly sturdy as the pop-up camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro. If you jiggle it (don't do this by the way) there's some serious movement. In fact, you can manually open/close the unit (again, don't do this) which isn't a good thing. Both cameras make a mechanical whirring noise when activated but it's not overly loud.

The camera apps are straightforward to use, easy to navigate and are very similar to any other native camera app built into smartphones.

Let's take a closer look at the cameras in-action, as we compare shots taken with each smartphone side-by-side (in the next section).
