If you're looking for the best Canon camera, whether it's a compact camera, a Canon DSLR, or a Canon mirrorless camera, then you've come to the right place. If you happened to stumble upon this list when really, you were looking for the best Nikon cameras, have a read of this top list instead: Best Nikon Cameras.

Canon is probably best known for creating DSLR cameras that range from beginner DSLRs, such as the Canon EOS 2000D, through to professional models with much higher prices, like the Canon EOS 5DS R featured in our 'Top 13 Best Full-Frame DSLRs' list.

Even though DSLRs are still popular, 'Mirrorless' is the buzz word of the moment and Canon has introduced the Canon EOS R and EOS RP to the full-frame mirrorless camera market but, interchangeable cameras aren't for everyone so that's why Canon also offers smaller compact cameras. These include the Canon PowerShot G5 X Serious Advanced Compact Digital Camera and the Canon Powershot SX720 HS which is perfect for travel

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is the fourth version of the highly popular 5D series and brings with it a number of improvements that make it a highly competitive full-frame Digital SLR. We see the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV remaining a popular choice for professionals across many genres as it's a good all-around camera that has a 30.4MP sensor, 61-point fast autofocus and Canon's "Dual Pixel Raw Optimizer" for fine adjustment of raw files after you've taken the shot.

Best Canon Camera For Beginners - Entry-level: Canon EOS 250D/Rebel SL3

Canon EOS 250D

The Canon EOS 250D/Rebel SL3 has a small body and an easy-to-use design which will make it appealing to beginners. Plus, the around £500 asking price is quite reasonable, for what you get, and should be still in reach of those wanting to make their first steps into DSLR photography. Yes. there is the 2000D which is less than £400 but we didn't really rave about it in our review so we'd suggest spending a bit more cash.

You also benefit from the vast array of Canon EF and EF-S lenses available, with the 50mm f/1.8 STM lens being a particularly good value option. In fact, the wide choice of lenses remains a key advantage of choosing a DSLR from Canon.

Overall, the Canon EOS 250D offers a compact DSLR, with Canon’s typical, and excellent, colour reproduction. Noise performance is improved compared to other entry-level Canon DSLRs, battery life is great and you also get an optical viewfinder.

Best Canon Camera For Vlogging and YouTube: Canon Powershot G7X Mark III

Canon Powershot G7X Mark III

A camera updated specifically for vloggers, is the Canon Powershot G7X Mark III, which updates the Mark II, but adds 4K video recording (limited to 10minutes), improves the tilting touch-screen, and also adds in a microphone socket. That's not all though, the G7X Mark III also support live-streaming straight to YouTube, as long as you have a YouTube account that supports live streaming. You can also use the touch-screen to start and stop video recording.

Video quality is good, with good colour reproduction, reliable exposure, and good focus. Some flare was noticeable in the video when the sun was in the frame, but as long as you avoid bright light sources, this shouldn't be a problem. Image stabilisation helps keep the video steady and stable, and there are options to enhance the Dynamic IS stabilisation (Low, Standard, High). With the camera set to standard, there was some shake when using the full optical zoom of the camera.

Priced around £699 it offers a lot of features that should make most videographers happy.

You can find additional G7X III videos on the ePHOTOzine YouTube Channel and even more camera options can be found in our guide to the Best Vlogging Cameras which includes the Canon PowerShot SX610 HS budget compact camera.

Key Features For Video:

  • 4K video 30, 25fps
  • FullHD video recording (up to 120fps)
  • Stereo Sound
  • Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS)
  • Mic socket

Best Canon Camera For Video: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

As the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV records 4K video at the full CINE resolution of 4096×2160, at up to 30fps, it's a pretty good choice for those who regularly capture video. 4K CINE video recording also gives the camera an edge in video recording when compared to 4K cameras that record in UHD resolution instead. However, 4K video uses the centre of the frame and crops into the frame quite noticeably with a 1.74x crop factor, so a 50mm lens becomes equivalent to an 87mm lens.

4K CINE video at 25fps recorded for 30 seconds resulted in a 1.9GB file (at 500Mbps), so you'll need a large memory card to record longer videos. There is the option to record HDR videos, too.

There is a built-in mono microphone, and for stereo sound, you will need to plug a stereo microphone into the microphone socket on the camera, which is a shame considering the high-spec of the rest of the camera. You can select still frames from 4K video and save them as 8.8-megapixel images, in-camera.

As with other Canon DSLRs, due to the lack of in-camera image stabilisation, the use of a lens with image stabilisation (IS), or the use of a tripod is highly recommended, for the best results.

We have published a number of 5D Mark IV videos on the ePHOTOzine YouTube Channel.

For higher frame rate 4K video recording, you will need to look at the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II, which offers 4K video at 60fps but at a much higher price.

More options can be found in our guide to the Best 4K Video Cameras.

Key Features For Video

  • 4K video at 30/25/24p (DCI CINE resolution), up to 500Mbps
  • 1080p video at 60/50/30/25/24fps, up to 180Mbps
  • 720p at 120/100fps
  • Mic, Headphone sockets, Dual pixel AF
  • 8.8mp images from 4K video (in-camera)

Best Canon Camera For Low-Light: Canon EOS 1D X Mark II

Canon EOS 1DX II

For good low light photography, a wide ISO range is important and the Canon EOS 1D X Mark II ISO range goes from ISO50 (Extended), all the way to ISO409600 (Extended).

ISO102400 may still be usable on the Canon but above this noise becomes quite ugly and it'd be best to avoid using an ISO setting above ISO102400.

Ultimately, the Canon EOS 1D X Mark II produces results that can be used happily up to ISO25600, or processed further at higher ISO settings, with reasonable fairly results up to ISO102400. Processing the raw files, or resizing images for use on the web would also reduce noise levels.

Overall, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II performs exceptionally well, delivering excellent image quality with excellent noise performance.
