Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses:

Fujifilm Fujinon X-Mount Lenses

Fujifilm have for many decades been a well respected manufacturer of both cameras and lenses. Initially concentrating on high end medium format rangefinder designs, plus 35mm film SLR and compact cameras, Fujifilm is now firmly established as a leading manufacturer of mirrorless digital cameras. Currently there are medium format and APS-C crop sensor product lines. The X-mount lenses are all intended for the APS-C format, using the Fujifilm X mount, which has a generous diameter of 44mm. This enables the design of fast aperture lenses, such as the 50mm f/1.0.

Fujifilm X-mount lenses are named Fujinon and offer a uniformly high standard both of manufacture and performance. The lenses are solidly made, compact, well engineered and have smooth and reliable controls. Many of the lenses have conventional aperture rings, with an A setting which allows the option of controlling the aperture from the camera. Many are also Weather Resistant and this is always clearly marked on the lens barrel.

An example of lens labelling would be: Fujinon Aspherical Lens Super EBC XF 16-80mm 1:4 R OIS WR 72mm. This breaks down as: Super EBC = Super Electron Beam Coating; XF = lens range, XF is the standard range and XC being a mainly plastic range of lower cost lenses; 16-80mm 1:4 = 16-80mm zoom lens with f/4 maximum aperture; R = lens has an aperture ring; OIS = Optical Image Stabilisation in lens; WR = Weather Resistant; 72mm = the filter size. Some lenses are also marked LM = Linear Motor, giving fast and virtually silent AF.

These are the best of the Fujifilm Fujinon X-mount APS-C format lenses that we have reviewed:

Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR

There is something quite liberating about travelling light with just one lens and there can be no finer choice than a classic focal length such as this 23mm. It soon becomes apparent why 35mm lenses were so well regarded on 35mm cameras, and certainly, the 23mm recaptures this versatility in terms of its APS-C crop format field of view. For those who are also concerned about the effect of the smaller format, the faster f/1.4 aperture will help make up for the increased depth of field and resultant difficulty in throwing backgrounds out of focus. Ultimately though, these sorts of comparisons are only approximate guidelines and the APS-C format has a look and strengths all of its own.

In summary, a beautiful lens that delivers the goods with style.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR

Fujifilm has created a lens that is a credit to its design team. A superb performance in a compact package, with an aperture ring and weather resistance thrown in. Add to that faultless handling, beautiful results and a really useful focal length and we definitely have a winner. There is no shake reduction of course, so that will have to rely on anything available in-camera, and there is the aperture ring lock that could be usefully modified, but really these are minor things compared to the considerable strengths of the lens.

Basically, a great lens at the right price and an "Editor's Choice".

Fujifilm has created a lens capable of delivering image quality of the highest order, that is robustly built, lightweight, weather resistant and that focuses quickly to boot. Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon 20-35mm GF 20-35mm F/4 R WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon 20-35mm GF 20-35mm F/4 R WR

This is such an exciting lens to use that it tempts us towards medium format. Is there an advantage over full frame? There is probably an edge, but then again full frame cameras are so good... Fujifilm tempts us with not only high resolution and exquisite rendering, but also with reduced depth of field, smooth bokeh, and delicious handling... Even the cost, although not inexpensive, is really on par or even less than some full-frame systems. OK, it's still fairly heavy and bulky, but then again so are some full-frame cameras.

No mistake, it's a great lens, even if it doesn't focus as closely as we might like. It has some very fine qualities and produces truly great images. It may not be for everyone because of the weight, bulk or even the huge file sizes, but if you need it (or want it) you probably know that already and will be well on the way to parting with some cash. Highly recommended.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 30mm F/2.8 R LM WR Macro
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 30mm F/2.8 R LM WR Macro

Whilst there is no denying the advantages of the longer macro lenses, there is a definite place for the shorter and more compact versions. They are easier to use with tabletop macro work, especially when shooting flat subjects such as documents. They may be less good for shooting wildlife outdoors, where a longer working distance can be useful. As always, the right tool for the job makes things much easier.

This Fujifilm lens maintains the high quality of the rest of the range, has very agreeable optical qualities and absolutely brilliant handling. For preference, it might be better to use a Fujifilm body that actually has Weather Resistance that matches that of the lens. Whether or not it would be the first choice of focal length for a macro lens depends very much on the photographic preferences of the purchaser.

For those who prefer a shorter macro lens, this Fujifilm can definitely be 'Highly Recommended'.

Fujifilm XF Fujinon 23mm f/1.4 R

Sporting the same field of view as a 35mm lens does on a 35mm camera, this lens should be a popular choice for the wish list of many Fuji X-series camera owners, especially with that fast f/1.4 maximum aperture. The quality delivered by this lens is excellent, in terms of build and optical performance, which makes the asking price fair.

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR

Optically, this standard zoom from Fujifilm is up there with the best f/2.8 zooms available for APS-C format cameras. It is capable of delivering excellent sharpness, with low CA and distortion. More importantly, it handles well, and features such as weather sealing and the Nano-GI coatings applied to this lens ensure it is capable of holding its own amongst the best zoom lenses available.

Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR

There are an increasing number of superb lenses on the market, and the quality of results from these can be amazing, but the tendency has been for not only increasing standards but inevitably increasing costs. This tricky balance is for the individual to decide – an equation between cost, quality and of course the depth of our pockets.

Fujifilm's Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR lens is gorgeous, at a price, and inevitably it scores highly, in this instance being Highly Recommended.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R

This lens is a fine addition to the X-series lens lineup. It is incredibly sharp when stopped down, and performs well wide open too. The build and handling are also of the same high standard we've come to expect from Fujifilm. The price seems quite reasonable when compared to alternatives produced for other camera systems too.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD

This lens is a fine addition to the X-series lens lineup. It is incredibly sharp, whether you're shooting with the aperture wide open, or not. The APD filter, which sets this lens apart from the standard 56mm f/1.2 is a really interesting addition, which truly helps to improve the appearance of out-of-focus areas, with no loss of sharpness where the image is in focus. The main penalty is the loss of light transmitted through the lens. If you require fast apertures, for low-light shooting, this may make the standard non-APD version the better choice for you. If however, your choice to shoot at fast apertures as a creative decision, and you're not struggling for light, then this is the lens for you. The difference in this respect will be worth the extra to those who appreciate it.

Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR

This lens is certainly capable of delivering excellent-quality images. When you consider the robust build, weather-resistant construction and excellent handling of this lens, the price seems very reasonable indeed.

Fuji X-series camera owners after a high-quality, fast, wide-angle lens will find this lens should easily satisfy their requirements. There is little fault to be found with this lens, but much to recommend.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR

Although not as popular as it once was, the 135mm field of view is ideal for portraits, thanks to the flattering effect of compressed perspective. This lens lends itself to that kind of photography well ,with very high sharpness levels in the centre, a fast maximum aperture and quick, accurate focusing. Weather sealing will be a bonus for those who like to venture out when it’s inclement too. Overall, this is an excellent lens that should win over many fans amongst Fujifilm X-series camera owners.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm XF Fujinon 50mm f/1.0 R WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm XF Fujinon 50mm f/1.0 R WR

Much of the decision revolves around cost, weighed against the alternatives and the features that are unique to the new lens. It performs really well, right in the top tier, it is designed specifically to offer something special for the portrait photographer, although not exclusively so by any means. It has weather resistance. It is fast for use in low light situations. Focusing is razor accurate. It is an absolute joy to use on the Fujifilm X-T4. It is an exciting lens to use, and has the aforementioned “pixie dust” magic ingredient. The cost will mean it is not for everyone, but at least it is within the bounds of what might be seen as affordable, depending on our own priorities. Overall, it has to be Highly Recommended.

Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR

With the partial caveat regarding edge sharpness under some circumstances, overall the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR lens put in a pretty sparkling performance. Above all, it has proved to be an incredibly useful range of focal lengths and I could easily imagine this lens staying firmly on the camera almost all the time.

Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 14mm f/2.8 R

Ultra-wide angle lenses don't generally get much better than this optic. Sure this lens isn't cheap, but you get a lens that is more than capable of delivering superb results with extremely low distortion, barely any sign of chromatic aberrations and outstanding sharpness.

The general build and feel of this lens is also excellent, and the hyperfocal scale on the lens barrel is a useful addition.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR 1:1 Macro
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR 1:1 Macro

There is no doubt that the Fujinon 80mm f/2.8 Macro is a superb lens, but then so it should be as it is priced considerably above the rest of the market. Unfortunately for Fuji X users, there are limited options, but other marques have all sorts of fine macro lenses available to them. It is hard to find a bad macro lens where they all aspire to excellence, being a flagship optic for most marques.

It's always a dilemma, but in summary, the lens is outstanding but the price is very high. It will serve those who take the plunge and buy it very well and looks likely to last for many years of hard service.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR

The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR is not into super-telephoto territory; even with the crop factor we are still only talking about 305mm or 427mm with the TC. However, at f/2 we are looking at some improved shutter speeds for stopping the action. The AF is fast, the handling is great, even the weight does not seem so bad as the balance on the camera is very good indeed.

The price is high of course and is bound to be with those huge Super ED and ED elements and that f/2 aperture. For some, this will be a must-have lens, and despite the high cost it still has to be Highly Recommended.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR

Looking at what this lens actually offers the Fuji user, at a reasonable cost, it extends the focal length to a very desirable 300mm, whilst maintaining overall quality very well up to 200mm and keeping that crisp central sharpness right up to 300mm. The edges do fade somewhat at 300mm, but this may be a price worth paying as many subjects will be in the centre of the frame. It could even be turned to an advantage by having sharp portraits with more diffused edges. It is knowing what a lens can and can't do that enables us to use its characteristics to aesthetic advantage.

So, overall the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR is an excellent performer at a reasonable price and a valuable addition to the Fujifilm repertoire of XF lenses. Highly recommended.

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR

An 18mm lens on APS-C format is not unheard of, as there are compact cameras around with fixed 18.3mm f/2.8 lenses. In fact, the focal length is quite versatile, offering landscape, travel, architecture and street as its main areas. This new lens does however also lift itself into something else entirely by way of its outstanding technical performance plus its bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture. This alone makes the outlay worthwhile and Fujifilm users will I'm sure be delighted by its performance.

It is not only technical performance that recommends this lens, but also very fine handling. There are not many controls, but everything is smooth as silk and the lens is a very enjoyable ergonomic experience.

In summary, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR is another outstanding lens from Fujifilm and Highly Recommended.

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR

Fujifilm has produced a very slick and very high-quality lens that makes an excellent partner to the current range of Fujifilm mirrorless cameras, even the new high-resolution 40MP X-H2. It is clearly aimed at videographers as well as photographers, with its silent AF system and Power Zoom. This latter feature enables very smooth zooming, the speed of zoom being controlled by how far and how forcibly the ring is pressed. This is actually much easier to use for video than a manual zoom, at least when shooting handheld. Weather resistance is also very welcome, as always, so we can brave the winter months and carry on shooting. There is a slight price penalty for these features, but overall the lens does give fair VFM. For those who do not need the Power Zoom feature the lens is still an attractive proposition as it performs so well.

A good choice for all styles of photography, and 'Highly Recommended'.

Overall Rating

Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

This is a very well-made lens with lovely bokeh and a high level of sharpness. Flare, CA and distortion are all but abolished. Images look clean and crisp and sharpen well in Photoshop. The lens is easy to use, the OIS system enables handheld shooting with confidence and the close focus extends the possibilities of subject matter. It is an excellent all-round choice for an ultra-telephoto for Fujinon cameras and maintains the reputation of Fuji for high-quality lenses.

Zoom lenses like this are a welcome addition to the Fujifilm X-series line-up, providing greater flexibility and convenience than the prime lenses released with the X-Pro1 provide.

The performance of this lens is by no means poor, but for the asking price, you'd be forgiven for expecting a little more. Still, this lens is more than capable of producing decent-quality images and the image stabilisation system works extremely well.

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS

Best Fujifilm X-Mount Lenses: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 60mm f/2.4 R Macro
Overall Rating

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 60mm f/2.4 R Macro

Those wishing to use this lens for portraiture and the occasional bit of macro work will find the performance of the Fuji 60mm pretty much perfect. Sharpness is excellent from corner to corner, CA is pretty much non-existent, and other optical problems like distortion and falloff are also very well controlled.

Unfortunately, those wishing to use this lens primarily for macro work may find the issue with internal reflections a little too frustrating. The price is about right for the excellent build quality and features, but this lens will really sell itself on its near-perfect optical performance.

Although most people who end up owning this lens will do by picking it up as part of a kit with the X-M1 camera, it still may be a compelling choice for owners of other X-series cameras, due to its lightweight, 16mm wide-angle and comparatively low price. Add to that the decent optical performance throughout the zoom range, as well as low levels of chromatic aberrations, low falloff and distortion, and it makes this a very competent lens, for not a lot of money.
