Choosing The Best Security Camera 2020

Security cameras are designed to protect your home in case of burglary or to help you monitor what is happening both inside and outside your home. You can even use them to monitor who comes to your door to see if you want to answer the door or to see what your pets are up to during the day.

As there's now so much choice when it comes to choosing the right security camera for you, we're taking a look at the different options available, and what you should be looking for when you purchase your security camera.

Best Security Camera 2020 Key Features

You'll need to make sure you get the right camera, as some are designed for indoor use only, and are often cheaper. The security cameras designed for outdoor use are weather-proof and have their own power supply.

You can also get "Smart" Digital Security Cameras which offer a network connection, and allow you to see who is at your door or in your house, no matter where you are, as long as you have an internet connection. You also have the choice of wired or wireless which, again, have their pros and cons as wireless does mean you can put the security camera anywhere but the signal could drop out whereas being wired will give you a more reliable, constant connection.

Security cameras with automatic motion detection are popular as they send alerts to your smartphone and, ideally, you want a security camera with night vision that can record at a decent quality

Almost all security cameras now offer at least 1080p/FullHD resolution which is the minimum resolution we'd recommend, as it's unlikely that a lower resolution than this will provide anything particularly useful. Spend more and you can find cameras that record 4K (around 8mp) video, although the price does go up dramatically.

Other features you may want to consider are two-way audio (so you can communicate with your pet, or indeed, the person at your front door), and cloud storage. Although, cloud storage could mean additional charges for you so check the terms and conditions. Some companies offer free cloud storage/recording for 12 months and then charge you a fee going forward which can be in the realms of £120.

With all of these factors in mind, here are our top security camera recommendations for various budgets. All of the security cameras listed can be found on Amazon UK where you can read user reviews for more detailed opinions. Most are also featured in Amazon's 'most wished for' or 'best sellers' lists, too.

As with all of our top lists, by clicking the green Amazon buttons featured below each product. It doesn't cost you anything extra when you press our Amazon buttons but by using our Amazon Affiliate links when ordering anything online, you are supporting the site - thank you. Clicking 'Buy on Amazon USA' will redirect you to the Amazon store for your country. Best Security Cameras 2020: Top Security Camera You Can Buy Today

Nest Security Cameras

Nest are probably most commonly known for home heating controls but they do make security cameras, too, which are compatible with Alexa and there are outdoor as well as indoor versions available.

Google Nest Cam IQ Security Camera

Google Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

The 'IQ' version of the Next camera series is the latest edition of the security camera that offers a few upgrades on the original camera listed below. Upgrades include a close-up tracking view, 4K sensor and HDR footage. There's also a 12x digital zoom built-in and multiple 4K images are combined so detail won't be lost, even on days where light levels are challenging.

Nest Cam IQ can detect a person up to 15 metres (50 feet) away, track them, then alert you with a photo of who's there (via your smart device and the Nest app). Plus, facial recognition is used so the camera will only alert you if the face in the frame isn't recognised. If you want to, you can talk to who's on camera and hear what's going on, via the Nest app. This includes footage at night as the camera has night vision.

It's not a cheap camera but it is good, from what people are saying about it, but you really do need the Nest app to get access to 'Nest Aware' which, after your trial is up, has to be paid for. By paying the subscription fee, you get continuous cloud recording, person alerts, customisable activity zones, and more. However, if you can just live with live motion alerts and live streaming, you won't need the subscription which starts at £4 a month. Set-up is straightforward.

As well as an indoor version, there's an outdoor version that's weatherproof. You can install Nest Cam IQ Outdoor yourself. Just drill a hole in your wall and plug it into an indoor socket. To use an outdoor socket, you'll need the weatherproof power adapter for Nest Cam IQ Outdoor.

Prices start at £299 for the indoor version and rise to £329 for the outdoor version of the Nest Cam IQ.

Google Nest Cam IQ Security Camera Specs:

Google Nest Cam Security Camera - Indoors

Google Nest NC1102GB Security Camera

The Google Nest NC1102GB is the indoor version, priced at around £130 and it's on the 'Amazon Choice' list. It can use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to detect people, animals, and alert you when needed via your smartphone, email or smartwatch. Plus, you can talk and hear what's going on, via the Nest app, as well as see images. This includes footage at night as the camera has night vision.

You can see live what's happening at home or go back 3 hours to see what's happened previously and the camera gives you a 130-degree viewing angle.

A 30-day free trial comes with the Nest app to 'Nest Aware' which you can opt-out of at any time or, if you like the tools, subscribe to use it. Some who have bought the security camera say it's pretty useless without the subscription so do keep that in mind.

As for set-up, it's straightforward with a literal plug-in-and-go method. The security camera comes with a stand/magnetic base, 3-meter USB cable/power adapter, quick start guide and screws/wall mounting plate.

You do need wi-fi and a working internet connection with a recommended upload speed of 2 Mbps or greater. smartphones or tablets you plan on running the Next app on will need to run iOS 8 or later, or Android 4 or later (some phones and tablets do not support 1080p; viewing HD quality requires Wi-Fi).

HIVE View Smart Indoor Security Camera

Hive View Indoor Security Camera

The HIVE indoor security camera is easy to install and comes in 2 colours - black & brushed copper or white & champagne gold. There's a 130° wide-angle lens, up to 8x digital zoom, 1080p HD video, and multiple installation options are available thanks to the magnetic base and included wall mount kit. The camera cube is also detachable.

There are manual tilt/pan options and rolling 24-hour camera history comes as standard with an option to upgrade to rolling 30-day camera history plus other exclusive member benefits. Subscription starts at £3.99 a month.

You can use 2-way audio to talk/listen and recordings can be downloaded to your smart device but the Hive isn't compatible with Alexa...yet.

Motion and sound detection is built-in along with person detection with thumbnail image notifications and night vision gives you clear pictures in the dark.

An AC power adaptor and cable is provided but if the camera should lose connection for any reason, it is powered by a 2100mAh built-in rechargeable battery that can last up to 1 hour and you will get a notification telling you the camera is no longer powered by mains.

An internet connection is recommended along with an iOS or Android device running an up-to-date operating system. Thumbnail image notifications require iOS 10 or later on iOS devices and your device will need Bluetooth 4.1.

To install your Hive View or Hive View Outdoor you need to download the main Hive app, not the Hive Camera app. Hive View and Hive View Outdoor cannot be installed using the Hive Camera app.

HIVE View Smart Outdoor Security Camera

With the outdoor version of the HIVE security camera, you can check who's at the door or in the garden at any time, and get a notification when there's unusual activity.

The outdoor version of the camera shares similar specs to the indoor security camera with night vision, 8x digital zoom, live streaming in 1080p HD with a 130-degree wide-angle view, two-way audio and person detection. However, as it's for outdoor use, the camera is weatherproof rated to IP66 so it can withstand dust, rain and all other weather conditions.

This can be as a thumbnail image, too. You get rolling 24-hour camera history as standard, with an option to add 30-day storage with the subscription.

Other, less expensive and not as well-known brands, ranked in order of best-selling on Amazon (UK)

Why go for a cheaper brand? - The cheaper brands or options will often (or sometimes) offer a MicroSD card slot, so you can store / record footage without the need for the cloud or other subscription services. There's also the cost-saving to take into consideration which will be an important factor for some, particularly if you're concerned about the security camera itself being stolen.
