If you've spent any time taking photos, then you'll know that keeping backups is a great idea, especially if you've ever had the misfortune of losing data or losing photos, and with them precious memories. That's why it's important to have a backup of your photos, and one of the simplest ways to do this is to use an external USB hard drive. Here we look at some of the best selling drives available. Looking through this list, you should be able to find something suitable, that is affordable, compact, large, fast, or tough, depending on your needs.

A quick note on storage sizes: 1TB = 1000GB (roughly), 2TB = 2000GB (roughly), etc. Before you decide what size you need, you'll want to work out how much you want to backup, so make sure you check this before purchasing. You also don't get the whole amount of space as usable storage, for example, a 1TB drive will give you 931GB usable, a 6TB drive will give you 5.45TB usable space.

If you're unsure of how to set up a backup system, have a look for a drive that comes with backup software, some even come with Recovery software if there are any issues. If you need some backup software, have a look at EaseUS Todo Backup, or have a look at more options in our guide to the Top 35 Best Software Packages, which has both free and paid solutions. Even if the drive doesn't include Backup software, they can all be used as a backup device, using these universal instructions.
