Best Third Party Micro Four Thirds Lenses: Kowa Prominar 8.5mm f/2.8
Overall Rating

Kowa Prominar 8.5mm f/2.8

The Kowa Prominar 8.5mm f/2.8 is a classy-looking lens, it's beautifully made and the results are excellent. AF would make focusing much easier, but it can be worked around and still leave the lens being very satisfying to use. At least with the large amount of depth of field available there is some leeway at longer distances.

In summary, it's a great lens that is delightful in use and delivers the goods.

Best Third Party Micro Four Thirds Lenses: Meike 6.5mm f/2.0 Fisheye
Overall Rating

Meike 6.5mm f/2.0 Fisheye

The circular fisheye lens is a fairly specialised tool, the frame filling designs being much more prevalent and arguably more generally useful. However, who could argue with that f/2 aperture, with the quality of the results, with the excellent price, with the solid construction? The only difficulty is that judging manual focus is well nigh impossible, but the huge depth of field can cover most situations very well.

If we want to delve into the fisheye world at a reasonable cost and no compromise on quality, then this could well be a very strong contender.

Best Third Party Micro Four Thirds Lenses: Voigtlander 10.5mm f/0.95 Nokton
Overall Rating

Voigtlander 10.5mm f/0.95 Nokton

Overall this is another fine, fast lens from Voigtlander for Micro Four Thirds. Those shooting video will appreciate the option of a stepless aperture and many will enjoy exploiting the fast maximum aperture and ability to isolate a subject from their surroundings with a shallow depth of field.

Sharpness delivered by this lens is excellent, with acceptable distortion and falloff. It’s a shame CA levels are a little on the high side, but then that is probably unavoidable on a lens as wide and as fast as this. Build quality harks back to a bygone era of brass lenses with a silky-smooth focusing action. As a result, it is sure to win over many fans.

Best Third Party Micro Four Thirds Lenses: Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 Nokton Version II
Overall Rating

Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 Nokton Version II

Overall, the second version of this 25mm Voigtlander lens is a nice improvement. Those shooting video will appreciate the option for a stepless aperture and everyone will enjoy the fast maximum aperture and ability to isolate a subject from their surroundings with shallow depth of field.

This sample also appears to offer improvements in sharpness and contrast over the copy of the first version we tested some time ago. Whether this is down to natural variation between lens samples, or improvements to the optical construction is difficult to say at this point, without having a few of each lens version to test and compare. The sample tested was more than usable at f/0.95, so long as care is taken to ensure accurate focus. Overall, this is an interesting lens, that should win over many fans.
